Recent projects and residencies
New and Unfamiliar Territories
Fellow artist Sara Dudman and I have embarked on a rather ambitious project: two exhibitions of our work made as a result of our yearly residencies to unfamiliar parts of the country. Our last visit at the end of May was to the small Yorkshire harbour town of Staithes, near Whitby, where we spent two industrious weeks gathering information and researching the coast and surrounding moorland.
We had already acquired two exhibitions for this and other work, one in October at the Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton, Somerset which will include much of the work from all three trips to Brisons Veor, Cornwall, Allenheads Contemporary Art in Northumberland and our latest visit to Staithes. In this show we will be joined by other artrists who have a similar link to these places including Stef Mitchell a printmaker from Staithes and Mike Collier a painter/printmaker from Newcastle, both of whom respond to their surroundings.
We have also been fortunate enough to be chosen for one of the two Shifting Somerset exhibitions at Contains Art in Watchet, Somerset in which we will be doing a comparative creative study of both the harbour town of Staithes and the harbour town of Watchet, both of which have similar links to the mineral and fishing trade. This exhibition will open next May and it it is hoped that we can take it up north as well.
Brison Veor Residency, Cape Cornwall – 2014
A week-long residency with artist Sara Dudman, responding to the location. I produced work during and after the residency.
Out of the Blue – 2014
A project and subsequent exhibition for the Contains Art ‘Voyages’ project. I created a series of constructions from a combination of cyanotypes, old photographs and found ephemera of the town of Watchet, culminating in a two-week long exhibition at the Contains Art Gallery.
The Sound We See – Somerset Film and Video – 2015
A project devised to make a 30 minute video of 24 hours in the life of Somerset, using 1 minute clips created by 35 artists and filmakers using Super 8 film and basic hand- developing techniques. The project was part of the world wide ‘City Symphony’ project and hosted by Somerset Film at the Engine Room in Bridgwater. I filmed a milking parlour from 4 – 5am.
Allenheads Contemporary Arts Residency, Northumberland – 2015
A two-week long residency with studio provided. Working alongside Sara Dudman again, responding to the landscape and ambience of the North Pennines. I produced work during and after our stay.
New Dimensions – January to April 2016
New Dimensions has been a year-long funded project of five artists responding to the Somerset Heritage stores collections of artefacts and archives, culminating in an exhibition at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton.
The artists involved are Jacy Wall – textile and video, Chris Dunseath – sculpture and drawing, Ralph Hoyte- poetry and installation, Richard Tomlinson – film installation, and me, constructions and video. We are joined by emerging artist, Laura Aish, who is also working with film.
